Oct 14, 2014 · The TP&W name is confusing for a couple of reasons. One reason is that it is the name of two different railroads -- an old, or original, one and a current one. The other reason is that neither actually goes to Toledo. The original railroad was between Keokuk, IA, and either Sheldon or Effner, IL, or Kentland, IN. .

On March 10th, 1947 George McNear; owner and president of the TP&W, was shot and killed. The crime remains unsolved. New ownership appointed thereafter brought about dieselization of the railroad and overall modernization. This meant new shops, new signals, new storehouses, and in May 1955 - the ATSF and PRR jointed purchased the TP&W railroad. In 1960, the ATSF & PRR gained control of TP&W. In 1979, the ATSF reached agreement to acquire the former Pennsylvania Railroad's interest in TP&W. The TP&W was merged into ATSF in 1983. In 1989 the ATSF sold the Lomax-Peoria-Logansport main line to new company, which used the TP&W name and became an independent railroad.
